Surgery planned for Monday, August 22

I saw Dr. Sonfield again yesterday. The breast cancer committee met on Monday, discussed my case and still recommended a mastectomy (despite the fact that the tumor has disappeared), primarily since axillary lymph nodes had been involved.

He explained their reasons at length, especially that the MRI would not have been able to detect any lingering microscopic cancer cells in the lymph nodes; thus for the best long-term result, removal of the breast and the underarm lymph nodes is the wisest course. Pathology studies will be done afterward to determine whether any live cancer cells had remained in the lymph nodes.

After healing from the surgery, I will have radiation therapy to the same area, about 6 weeks worth.

As you know, based on John 10:10 my prayer has always been than the cancer cells would shrink, shrivel, die and disappear from my body, however the Lord accomplished that, not dictating to Him any specific method.

I will be the first patient on Dr. Sonfield’s surgery schedule on Monday, August 22 and will be in McLeod hospital up to 3 days. I’ll go to McLeod on the 18th for pre-admission blood work, chest x-ray and EKG. My last WBC was back to normal but RBC was still pretty low, causing continuing fatigue. I’ll be glad when that gets back to normal also.

Therapy for the lymphedema has been very successful – my left arm is normal size now. That therapy will continue for a while, since lymph node removal can make LE worse.

Re continuing problems with chemo side effects – about 10 days ago I developed fluid retention with badly swollen feet (gained 10 pounds in a week). Dr. Bajaj gave me a Rx for Lasix which helps some but the swelling comes right back. He said this is yet another delayed side effect from Taxotere (chemotherapy) and will gradually go away. I was already fighting constantly tearing eyes, but that has greatly improved this week.

Thank you so very much for all your prayers. Please keep praying and speaking the word (especially John 10:10) with me. I certainly don’t look forward to surgery, but I certainly do look forward to manifest evidence of God’s hand in my healing and to excellent long-term results.

Bette’s Journal

Bette Cox 2010

Christ is the "Big C" in my life!

That was told to me by a good friend recently, and it's so very true.

Jesus says in John 10:10, "The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full."

I believe Jesus. I hope you do too.

I have one request of other believers reading this journal:

Agree with me that the invader will shrink, shrivel, die and disappear from my body, whatever method the Lord uses to accomplish that.

Thanks in advance.
